Through the Veil: The Magick and Mystery of Halloween

Every year when the air turns crisp and the nights stretch long, something stirs in the collective soul. We hang cobwebs, light candles in pumpkins, and pretend to be ghosts or witches—but beneath all the playfulness, something sacred is whispering. Halloween is more than a night of tricks and treats. It’s the modern echo of Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year.

During Samhain, it was said the veil between worlds grew thin, allowing ancestors and spirits to walk among the living. Fires were lit for protection, offerings were left for the departed, and people wore disguises to blend in with wandering souls. It was a night for courage—a time to face death not with fear but with reverence.

In recovery, this energy feels familiar. Sobriety asks us to shed old selves, release what has outlived its purpose, and step into the unknown with trust. Samhain mirrors that process. Both teach us that endings are sacred beginnings in disguise.

As witches in recovery, we often walk between worlds too—the world we once knew and the one we’re now creating. Halloween gives us permission to honor that in-between space. It reminds us that transformation is rarely tidy; it’s wild, a little scary, and absolutely holy.

This week on The Witchual Hour, we’re leaning all the way into that truth. The show’s playlist is a love letter to the spooky, the silly, and the soulful parts of this season. You’ll hear everything from Rockwell and Lana Del Rey to Louis Armstrong and Tom Waits, all stitched together with tarot, ritual, and reflection.

I’ll also be answering listener questions about working with ancestor energy, grounding heightened emotions during this time of year, and how to honor your shadow without slipping back into old coping habits. We’ll close with a Samhain Candle Ritual—a simple practice of lighting a flame for the people and patterns we’ve released, thanking them for their lessons, and inviting in peace.

Halloween asks us to laugh with our ghosts instead of run from them. When we do, fear turns into freedom, and darkness becomes the soil where new light is born. So tonight, whether you’re dancing in costume or sitting quietly by candlelight, take a breath and remember:

You are part of the mystery.
You are the bridge between worlds.
You are the magick.
