The wheel of the year turns again, bringing us to the Fall Equinox, the sacred moment of balance when day and night stand equal before the descent into winter. In witchcraft traditions, this holiday is called Mabon, sometimes known as the Witch’s Thanksgiving. It is a time to gather gratitude for what has grown and ripened, and to prepare ourselves for the stillness of the darker months ahead.
On this episode of The Witchual Hour, we journey through this turning with music as our ritual. The playlist begins in the light with songs of thanks, celebration, and honoring the earth. It moves into the equal balance of reflection, where gratitude meets surrender, before descending into the deep, protective tones of shadow. We close with songs that remind us of the power of community, healing, and renewal, even in the darkest night.
Mabon is also reflected in the myth of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Taken into the Underworld by Hades, Persephone was bound to spend part of the year below because she had tasted the pomegranate seeds of that realm. Her mother’s grief made the earth barren, and only when Persephone returned did the land bloom again. Her descent brings winter’s stillness, and her return brings spring’s abundance. Through her story, we remember that every season of light is balanced by shadow, and every descent carries within it the promise of rebirth.
This episode is a sound offering for witches in recovery, seekers of balance, and anyone walking between the worlds. May it carry you into this season with gratitude in your heart, protection at your side, and trust in the sacred cycles of life.
