Tarot and Recovery: Using Daily Card Pulls to Stay Grounded and Spiritually Aligned

What do swords, shadow cards, and sobriety have in common?
For Sunshine and Dan, the answer is simple: tarot has become a trusted companion on the path of recovery.

In this episode of the Sober Witch Life Podcast, your favorite witchy co-hosts open up about how tarot has helped them navigate everything from emotional distress to spiritual growth—one card, one day, one insight at a time.

Why Tarot? Why Now?

Sunshine has been pulling cards since she was 16, but it wasn’t until she stepped into recovery that tarot became a daily ritual. “I pull a card for what’s in the light, what’s in the shadow, and then a wild card—like a message from the Universe,” she shares. That practice, layered with astrological insights and journaling, gives her both perspective and pattern recognition over time.

Dan agrees. “It helps me see what I need to focus on. When I research the card, especially the shadow card, it really stands out.”

For both hosts, tarot isn’t just a divination tool—it’s a mirror, a messenger, and sometimes even a cosmic alarm clock. It keeps them grounded, present, and in conversation with their higher selves.

Facing the Hard Cards

Let’s be honest: not every pull is a warm hug. Sunshine and Dan don’t shy away from talking about those “ouch” cards—like Cruelty, Defeat, Ruin, and the Tower. These cards often reflect internal battles, mental spirals, or emotional burnout—especially familiar terrain for anyone in recovery.

“The Tower showed up three times in one week,” Sunshine recalls. “It was a sign to stop resisting the change. Let it burn so something better can rise.”

Dan’s most memorable pull? The Ten of Swords. “It showed me that I was suffering—and I was the one creating that suffering.”

Still, even the hardest cards offer a path forward. They point to what’s ready to be healed. As Dan puts it, “Sometimes it’s something I don’t want to deal with, but I know it’s mine. I can’t hide from it.”

A Spiritual Check-In, Not Just a Reading

Tarot becomes more than fortune-telling when you’re in recovery. It’s a sacred check-in—a way to ask, What do I need today to stay aligned, honest, and whole?

For Dan, certain cards show up as reminders of fatherhood or responsibilities. For Sunshine, some cards act like energetic weather forecasts: giving her insight into the vibe of the day and how to move through it intentionally.

They also talk about using tarot for intention-setting, creating altars, and even pairing cards with other forms of divination like bibliomancy (using books to find guidance). For Dan, tarot even shows up in his art—he paints using specific decks that stir emotion and color stories onto the canvas.

What If You’re New to Tarot?

First things first: you don’t need someone to gift you a deck. Go find one you’re drawn to. Most modern decks follow a Rider-Waite structure, which makes them easier to learn from. Sunshine offers a gentle reminder that not all decks speak the same language—some change the suits, rename the cards, or focus on specific traditions like herbalism or ancestral work.

If a deck doesn’t resonate right away, don’t worry. “Sometimes a deck isn’t ready for you—or you’re not ready for it,” Sunshine says. “But give it time. Some decks I couldn’t connect with at first became my favorites later.”

Tarot as a Companion in Recovery

Recovery isn’t linear. Some days are light-filled; others are heavy with shadow. Tarot offers a compassionate, consistent way to check in with yourself, receive spiritual insight, and honor your healing.

Dan sums it up beautifully: “It gives me structure. And it points out things I wouldn’t always want to face—which is actually what makes it so beneficial.”

Whether you’re sober-curious, deep in the journey, or simply exploring your witchy path, this episode is a loving reminder that your intuition is always worth listening to—and that the cards just might help you hear it more clearly.
