Embracing the Shadow: The Necessary Shadow Work to Help in Sober Witchcraft Recovery

What if the part of you that binges, restricts, hides, or numbs isn’t broken—but buried? In sober witchcraft, shadow work isn’t just helpful—it’s sacred. It’s how we reclaim the pieces of ourselves hidden behind shame, secrecy, and spiritual wounding. And if you’ve struggled with disordered eating in recovery, this is especially for you.

Many witches in recovery find food to be the last frontier—the addiction that’s legal, normalized, and tangled up in family, comfort, and trauma. In the Sober Witch Life, we don’t just try to fix symptoms. We descend into the depths. We face the shadow. We alchemize it.

Let’s walk into the dark together—and reclaim your power.

What Is Shadow Work—and Why It’s Vital in Recovery?

Shadow work is the practice of bringing awareness, compassion, and integration to the parts of ourselves we’ve exiled.

For sober witches, these shadows often include:

  • Eating to soothe overwhelming feelings
  • Fearing their own bodies, hunger, or desire
  • Internalized beliefs that magick is only for the “pure” or “perfect”

Shadow work in recovery means we stop running. We look our patterns in the eye. We use magickal recovery tools to sit with what we’ve avoided—and transform it into wisdom.

“My binge eating didn’t stop when I got sober. It got louder. But so did my witchcraft. Shadow work gave me the tools to listen—and finally heal.”

The Shadow Behind Disordered Eating

Food as Protection, Food as Pain

For many of us, food wasn’t just nourishment. It was:

  • Control when everything felt chaotic
  • Comfort when love felt unsafe
  • A weapon used by others to shame or manipulate

Disordered eating often signals a spiritual wound—a disconnect from the body, the self, or a deep need for worth and safety.

Shadow work helps uncover:

  • Where did I learn that food was dangerous or shameful?
  • Who told me I was unworthy of being seen in my full body?
  • What am I really hungry for?

Journal Prompts to Begin the Descent

These questions are designed to guide you gently into your shadow. Light a candle, pull a tarot card, and write freely.

🖤 When did I first feel that food was not safe or loving?

🖤 Who taught me that my body wasn’t lovable, acceptable, or enough?

🖤 What emotions do I silence with food—anger, grief, fear, desire?

🖤 What do I believe would happen if I allowed myself to feel them fully?

These questions are part of our Witch’s Recovery Tools collection inside the Sober Witch Mobile App. You can access these prompts and more inside the Recovery Coven anytime.

Techniques for Shadow Work in Sober Witchcraft

1. Journaling with Tarot Spreads

Tarot is a mirror. Pull cards like:

  • The Moon (fears, illusions)
  • Death (release, transformation)
  • The Empress (body, pleasure, nurturing)

💫 Use spreads like:
“What’s hiding behind my hunger?”
“What emotion am I avoiding?”
“What does my inner child need right now?”

2. Inner Child Rituals

Often, the one who eats to escape is a younger version of you. Invite her in:

  • Set up an altar with childhood photos or objects
  • Write her a letter of forgiveness
  • Offer her favorite (non-triggering) food as a sacred meal

This is how we heal our roots, not just our routines.

3. Guided Journeying to Meet the Shadow Self

Using trance meditation or pathworking, connect with the part of you who carries the pain, who holds the binge, who hides the shame.

Ask her:

  • What does she need?
  • What is she protecting?
  • What wisdom does she hold?

These journeys can be deep. Ground afterward with herbs like mugwort, rosemary, or lavender.

Calling the Shadow Deities: Hecate, Lilith, Kali

These goddesses walk with us through the underworld:

  • Hecate: Keeper of crossroads, guide through the dark.
Use her key symbol in rituals to unlock buried truths.
  • Lilith: Exiled feminine, wild rage, reclaimed power.
Call her during moments of body rejection or shame.
  • Kali: Destruction of ego, death for rebirth.
Invoke her when you’re ready to destroy the patterns that no longer serve.

These deities don’t punish you. They initiate you.

The Waning Moon: Best Time for Shadow Rituals

Every lunar cycle gives us a portal.

The waning moon (after the full moon and before the new moon) is the perfect time to:

  • Purge old beliefs
  • Release toxic patterns
  • Do mirror work and deep journaling

Try This Ritual:

🕯️ Light a black candle
📜 Write down the shadow you’re ready to face (e.g., “I numb with food when I feel unloved”)
🔥 Safely burn the paper while repeating:

“I release what no longer serves.
I see the shadow, and I embrace her.
I return to myself.”

Rituals like these are explored every month in our Recovery Coven waning moon circles.

When the Shadow Is Loud, You’re Close to the Light

It’s easy to fear the dark. But here’s the truth:

The shadow isn’t your enemy. It’s your buried brilliance.

It holds:

  • Your unmet needs
  • Your sacred rage
  • Your truth
  • Your magic

By facing it, you liberate yourself. You become whole.

“I never thought I’d stop obsessing over my body. But the moment I stopped rejecting my shadow—and started listening—everything shifted.”
